"About A Boy" was inspired by the Dar Williams song "Mortal
City." I liked the notion of telling a story straight-up, with no frills or rhymes or biases. I wanted to give a clear delineation
of a string of events that left me feeling kind of confused and a lot lonely.
This song was
written in the back of a Shakespeare book at 2:30 in the morning. In the dark. The handwriting is almost illegible.
"About A Boy" is particularly special to me because it's the first song I've ever written where I went to the piano,
closed my eyes, and played exactly what I heard in my head. It was an amazing feeling.
My favorite part
is the piano interlude.
Lastly...you want to know a secret? There's more than one version of
this song.
